At this time in history,  Vermonters decided they wanted to form their own nation.  Vermonters were so independent that after the Revolutionary War they voted to form their own nation.   Other colonies formed the United States.

Vermonters set up their own Constitution.  It stated there would be no slavery in Vermont.  They created their own government, money, postal system, and schools.

Vermont is now part of the United States and we still have a reputation for being very independent thinkers and problem solvers.  Lots of historians say it was the rugged land and climate in Vermont that caused the people to be independent.   They had to think for themselves and come up with solutions to solve problems.
